A STUBBORN WINTER AND RECORD SNOWS IN THE SOUTH

Prof. John Young, Wisconsin State Climatology Office Director
Dr. Edward Hopkins, Climatologist

24 March 2008

Winter continues its hold on Wisconsin, with below average temperatures statewide and record snowfalls in the southeastern half. Temperature anomalies for the three winter months (December, January and February) were about three  Fahrenheit degrees below normal in the southwestern half of the state, and one Fahrenheit degree below normal in the northeastern half. The southeastern half of the state had precipitation (mainly snow) well above normal, in strong contrast to the northwestern section of the state , where precipitation amounts averaged 15 percent below normal.

Southern Wisconsin has been affected by an unusually high frequency of winter storms which shattered all previous winter records in Madison, Milwaukee and Green Bay. Many localities have received twice the normal seasonal snowfall. As of the end of the Easter weekend, Madison has now passed the Century mark of 100 inches; the previous record was 76.1 inches (in the winter of 1978/79).  Milwaukee's current total is now 97 inches, ranking second of all time (behind the 109 inches set in 1885/86).  Green Bay has broken the modern snowfall record with 81.3 inches.   La Crosse has received about 67 inches of snow to date, making it the 8th snowiest season on record.

Predicted weather patterns through the end of March indicate a tendency for cooler than normal conditions and precipitation, indicating some additional snowfalls to add to the record totals.
