RECORD
SOUTHERN WISCONSIN RAINS and FLOODING AGAIN
Prof. John Young, Wisconsin State Climatology
Office Director
Dr. Edward Hopkins, Climatologist
10 June 2008 updated on 5 August 2008
A slow-moving weather system on the weekend of 7-8 June 2008
brought torrential rain to sections of southern Wisconsin as
numerous thunderstorms developed across the region. Rainfall
totals over the weekend ranged between two and ten inches over
many locations that had received heavy winter snow and heavy rain
last summer. The recent rain caused some rivers to reach
record crests, resulting in flooding and mudslides. Several
dams broke because of the rise in water levels in the reservoirs
behind the dams.

and additional flood information for counties in western and central Wisconsin
from the La Crosse NWS Office. This office has a
radar loop and
storm damage information. Additional information along with
satellite imagery are available from

at UW-Madison. Current river
observations and precipitation maps for previous days are available from the

The data for these products come from the U.S. Cooperative Network, augmented by observations from NWS and FAA sites. These cooperative sites are operated by volunteer observers using approved instruments and observing techniques. Their efforts that provide sufficient data to generate these products are greatly appreciated.
