From the Southern Ocean to the Indian Ocean: Student perspectives on Oceanographic Research Cruises
Room 811 AO&SS, February 8, 2012, 2:25 PM
Abstract
From September 26th to October 31st 2011, Darren Pilcher participated in the CLIVAR (Climate Variability and Predictability) A10 repeat hydrography cruise which occupied the 30° S transect, beginning in Cape Town, South Africa and ending in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Duties on the NOAA research ship R/V Ronald H. Brown consisted of collecting water samples from CTD casts and analyzing for CFC gas concentrations (an important tracer in the ocean) using gas chromatography.
From Dec. 13th 2011- January 5th, 2012, Nicole Colasacco-Thumm worked aboard the R/V Roger Revelle as part of the DYNAMO (Dynamics of the Madden-Julian Oscillation) field campaign in the Indian Ocean. Research conducted during the cruise included atmospheric (e.g., radar, radiosondes, flux measurements) and oceanographic (e.g., "wirewalker", Phased Array Doppler Sonar) measurements. During this talk, she will be giving her observations as a member of the scientific field party.
