Ecological Data and Metadata Scientist Oak Ridge National Laboratory

The Environmental Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an opening for an Ecology Metadata and Data Scientist, working primarily in the Distributed Active Archive Center for Biogeochemical Dynamics http://daac.ornl.gov his team is part of the Environmental Data Science and Systems Group, which includes two other ecology and climate science data centers http://www.esd.ornl.gov/research/environ_data_systems/ The successful applicant will be involved in a range of data management activities, including developing and updating metadata associated with archive data sets, managing Web site content relating to the DAAC Archive and the FLUXNET network, updating and validating database records describing the archive holdings, and performing quality assurance checks on new and existing data sets.

Required skills and experience

  • A Bachelors or higher degree is required, preferably in an ecology or climate science related field
  • Applicants with a degree in aphysical or biological science combined with relevant experience in ecology, climate, or environmental science will be considered
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • An interest in the collection and management of data and metadata relating to ecology and climate science
  • The ability to work in a multidisciplinary, multiproject team environment
  • Some background in data analysis. Experience working withecology, climate science, or environmental data is preferred, and experience in a research environment with this sort of data is particularly preferred
  • Experience developing and maintaining one or more Web sites, including knowledge of HTML. Experience with one or more content management systems is desirable, as is experience with the organization and presentation of scientific and technical information

Desired skills and experience

  • General familiarity with databases, including knowledge of datamanipulation language SQL (select, insert, update, and delete)
  • General familiarity with Linux command line tools for editing and manipulating files
  • Experience in a customer service or customer relations function
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools and GIS concepts
  • A background involving Information Science - methods and protocols for organizing data for presentation to end users, potentially including the study of human-computer interactions
  • Experience working with common metadata formats, such as ISO 19115, Dublin Core, Ecological Markup Language (EML), or FGDC.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Atmospheric Sciences
  • Knowledge and experience in using weather and climate data

Job Description

  • Respond to phone, fax, email, and written reports for climate information
  • Respond to meteorologically related questions
  • Communicate with customers
  • Preperation of data, calculation of data charging and invoicing
  • Prepare and disseminate monthly summaries
  • Set-up and programming of special subscriptions to the MRCC online data
  • Prepare map-based climate data presentations using GIS
  • Maintain accurate records of customer activity including monthly usage statistics
  • Provide support for MRCC research as directed by project scientists

Air Quality Data Analyst in the Air Quality Data Analysis (AQDA) Division at Sonoma Technology (STI)

Data Analysis, Production, and Support for the EPA's Multi-Pollutant Trends Report (2007)
STI is assisting the EPA in developing a multi-pollutant trends report which simultaneously analyzes and reports on pollutants of interest (i.e., criteria pollutants and air toxics). STI is providing data analysis support including assimilation of existing work that addresses some of the reports needs, literature review to identify other relevant work and important policy issues, and the analysis of trends for multi-pollutants; and report production support including preparaton of graphics. Fresno Asthmatic Children's Environment Study (FACES) and various other research studies pertaining to health effects
STI scientists are co-investigators in the FACES and other epidemiologic studies and are primarily responsible for the exposure assessment element. We are involved in the study design, ambient air quality measurements, residential and school air pollution sampling, housing and time-activity surveys, quality assurance and data management of the exposure data, and exposure modeling.

Source Apportionment of PM2.5
STI applied the positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model to speciated PM2.5 data to understand the sources of these pollutants at sites across the U.S. and British Columbia. Results are used by policy makers to better develop emission control strategies.

Duties
You will conduct scientific assessment of climate observation practices related to the use of climate observing networks. You will conduct scientific analyses, help manage projects, conduct research, develop products, and perform long-range planning for high- quality climate observing networks. Your applied research will address contemporary issues in climate variability and change based on the analysis of the quality of climate observational data, and used to develop products from climate observations. You will be involved in the planning, coordination, and execution of independent scientific analyses related to climate observing systems to develop statistical physically-based transfer functions for long- term climate time series using data from multiple observing sites and appropriate computer programming languages (e.g., Fortran, C++) and statistical software packages. The results of this analysis will be used as input to various reports such as the Annual State of the Climate report published each year in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. Specific duties will include: (1) the development of transfer functions using appropriate computer programming languages (e.g., Fortran, C++) and statistical software packages to blend data from the U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN) and modernized Historical Climatology Network (HCN-M) stations with nearby climate stations [e.g., Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Surface Network (GSN) stations] to provide historical climate data; (2) assess the quality of climate data, identify historical biases, and make bias adjustments; (3) analyze climate variability and change; and (4) develop long-range plans and budgeting input in conjunction with USCRN and HCN-M Project Managers.
