Course Description

ntroduction to mathematical methods of solution used in numerical weather prediction. Properties of numerical methods including finite differencing approximation impacts and numerical instability. Numerical model characteristics demonstrated with hands-on experimentation with simple models for energy balance in the atmosphere (radiation and convection effects), advection and motion. Numerical performance of current operational numerical weather prediction models. Prereq: Atm Ocn 310, 311, 330, and 340 or cons. instr.
