How will I be graded?
Tips for the Weather Discussions:
A good way to start the discussion is by asking the audience a question.
Briefly define the big picture (i.e. synoptic environment) that supports the mesoscale event which is the focus of your discussion.
Emphasize "why?" rather than a narration of the obvious. (i.e. if you see a supercell on a radar or satellite image, tell us not just where it is, but why it is there.....CAPE, Ri, frontal forcing, Supercell Index, etc.)
Web sites like the weather channel's page ("pretty" rather than scientific) are discouraged unless they show something that can not be found else where.
Don't be afraid to use diagnostic tools that you are unsure of. These weather dicussions are meant to be learning exercises.
Try to support your theory of development of the features you discuss. We are more interested in whether you can support your ideas, than whether your ideas are right or wrong.
The focus of your discussion does not need to be a current event. So if you see a good event one day, feel free to archive information on it for your next weather discussion.
Showing graphics from the UW-NMS is always a good idea, because if you don't show them, we will probably ask about them!
