World Population Growth , 8000 B.C. to A.D. 2000.
The increase began around 1750 with improved techniques for agriculture and the beginnings of industrialized societies in Europe. It accelerated around 1850, when population numbered about 1 billion. Projecting through the year 2000, population should should exceed 6.5 billion ( Population Reference Bureau, 1976) The immediate cause of this increase is widely believed to be the improvement in public health brought about by modern sewage systems and public water supplies spreading though more of the world, assisted in wealthier communities by improved nutrition and medical knowledge.
