Note that almost 4/5 of the world population is now in what are currently defined as Less Developed Countries, and over half is in Asia. Nearly all the population growth is expected in the less developed regions.
Projections of future population involve assumptions about fertility and mortality rates. These estimates are based upon the U.N. Population Division Median Variant Series. They are lower than in past years for two reasons (i) it is assumed that family planning services will become more widely available in the less developed countries, leading to lower fertility rate, and (ii) AIDS will increase mortality above previous projections, particularly in Africa
