The tornado strengthened and widened near the end of its four mile path, killing 40 persons at New Holland, GA. The death toll was 98 and 180 were injured. The man had been blind and partially deaf since a truck accident in 1971. Hailstones up to 4 inches in diameter fell in Cumberland County in Maine. Hail accumulated to a depth of 6 inches at Naples, ME. This outbreak was the largest outbreak since the Superoutbreak of 3-4 April 1974. (Intellicast) 3 JUNE ...1860...The Great Comanche Tornado began its deadly trek near Cedar Rapids, IA, and ended its journey over Lake Michigan. 175 people lost their lives and 329 were injured. The town of Comanche, IA, on the Mississippi River, was completely destroyed. Tot al damage was 945,000 dollars (note - 1860 dollars). (Intellicast) ...1905...Seattle, WA received its heaviest ever 24 hour June rainstorm with 1.42 inches falling. (Intellicast) ...1921...A cloudburst near Pikes Peak, CO killed 120 people. Pueblo, CO was flooded by a twenty-five foot crest of the Arkansas River, killing 70 persons. Fourteen inches of rain was reported at Boggs Flat, where a hard surface road through nearly leve l country was washed out to a depth of seven feet. Crops were completely destroyed, and total damage from the storm was about half a million dollars. Hail fell for a record eighty- five minutes. The temperature dropped from near 80 degrees prior to the storm to 38 degrees at the height of the storm. There was one tornado of F4 intensity and 3 others were rated F3. Five people were killed, 193 were injured, and total damag e was 300 million dollars. Total crop damage was estimated at 500 million dollars. Damage was estimated at more than 276 million dollars. Afternoon thunderstorms in Virginia deluged northern Halifax County with 5.5 inches of rain in two hours. Thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 76 mph at Dusty WA, and wind gusts to 88 mph at Swanquarter, NC. (David Ludlum) ...1975...A tornado, reportedly spinning backwards (spinning clockwise), was sighted near Alva, OK. (The Weather Channel) ...1977...Severe thunderstorms with large hail and winds to 100 mph caused one million dollars damage around Norfolk, VA. A forty-two foot fishing boat capsized near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel drowning 13 of the 27 persons on board. Thunderstorms in southeastern Arizona produced heavy rain leaving some washes under four feet of water. Six cities in the north centr al U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date as readings soared into the upper 90s. Thunderstorms in Florida produced wind gusts to 65 mph which damaged two mobile homes northwest of Melbourne injuring six people. Thunderstorms spawned 13 tornadoes, and there were 154 reports of large hail and damaging winds. A strong (F-3) tornado injured six persons at Lorenzo, TX, and thunderstorm winds gusting to 100 mph killed one person at Glasscock City, TX. Softball size hail was reported at Lipscomb, TX and Glen Cove, TX. Hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter damaged the roofs of over 90 percent of the houses of Limon. (Intellicast) 7 JUNE ...1816...A famous June snow occurred in the northeastern U.S. Danville, VT reported drifts of snow and sleet twenty inches deep. The Highlands were white all day, and snow flurries were observed as far south as Boston MA. Waltham, MA reported a low te mperature of 33 degrees and New Haven, CT had a low of 35 degrees (David Ludlum) (Intellicast) ...1972...Richmond, VA experienced its worst flood of record as rains from Hurricane Agnes pushed the water level at the city locks to a height of 36.5 feet, easily topping the previous record of thirty feet set in 1771. (The Weather Channel) ...1984...Forty two tornadoes touched down in the upper Midwest with 21 of them occurring in Iowa. A F4 tornado tracked 30 miles through Mahaska and Keokuk counties in Iowa, killing 2 people and injuring 51. The small town of Wright was practically wiped out. Barneveld, WI was devastated shortly before midnight as a F5 tornado chewed up the town. Ninety percent of the town was damaged or destroyed, 9 people were killed, and 197 were injured. (Intellicast) ...1987...Thunderstorms in the Laramie Mountains of eastern Wyoming produced golf ball size hail, and up to five inches of rain in just one hour. Half a dozen cities in the Upper Mississippi Valley reported record high temperatures for the date, includin g La Crosse, WI with a reading of 97 degrees. Twenty-six cities in the central and eastern U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date, including Rapid City, SD with a reading of 104 degrees, and Mi les City, MT with a high of 106 degrees. (The National Weather Summary) ...1989...Thunderstorms produced severe weather from southern Oklahoma and eastern Texas to northwestern Florida through the day and night. Thunderstorms spawned 22 tornadoes, including a dozen in Louisiana, and there were 119 reports of large hail and d amaging winds. A strong (F-2) tornado at Gross Tete LA killed two persons, injured thirty others, and another strong (F-2) tornado injured 60 persons at Lobdell, LA. Softball size hail was reported at Hillsboro TX. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data) 8 JUNE ...1951...Two tornadoes, one rated F4 and the other F2, were caught on 16 mm film at Corn, OK. This was the first film ever taken of a tornado in the U.S. (Intellicast) ...1953...The worst tornado of record for the state of Michigan killed 115 persons. Flint, MI was hardest hit. The tornado, half a mile in width, destroyed 200 homes on Coldwater Road killing entire families. This tornado, rated F5 on the Fujita scale, was the last single tornado in the U.S. to kill over 100 people. (The Weather Channel) ...1966...A F5 tornado ripped right through the heart of the capitol city of Topeka, KS killing sixteen persons and causing 100 million dollars damage. The tornado, which struck during the evening, cut a swath of near total destruction eight miles long a nd four blocks wide, with the destruction of 820 homes. This was the most destructive tornado of record up until that time and the first tornado to produce 100 million dollars in damage. The tornado passed directly over Burnett's Mound, which legend had said protected Topeka from tornadoes. So much for that legend.(David Ludlum) (Intellicast) ...1974...Severe thunderstorms spawned at least twenty-three tornadoes in Oklahoma during the afternoon and evening hours. One of the tornadoes, rated F4 on the Fujita Scale, struck the town of Drumright killing fourteen persons and injuring 150 others. A F3 tornado damaged the National Weather Service office Will Rogers Field in Oklahoma City. Two F3 tornadoes hit the city of Tulsa. Thunderstorms in Tulsa County also produced as much as ten inches of rain. Total damage from the storms was around thi rty million dollars. It was the worst natural disaster of record for Tulsa. A tornado, rated F4, tracked 38 miles through Lyons, Osage, and Shawnee Counties in Kansas. Emporia, KS suffered heavy damage with 6 people killed, 220 injured, and 20 million dollars damage done. Thunderstorms in Ohio produced wind gusts to 75 mph near Akron, and deluged Pittsfield with two inches of rain in thirty minutes. Thunderstorms in the Florida Keys drenched Tavernier with 7.16 inches of rain in 24 hours. Eleven cities in the central U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date. (The National Weather Summary) ...1989...Thunderstorms produced severe weather over the Central Gulf Coast Region during the day and evening. Severe thunderstorms spawned 17 tornadoes, including one which injured ten persons and caused a million dollars damage at Orange Beach, AL. Ei ght tornadoes struck southeastern Louisiana during the early morning hours. A strong (F2) tornado hit Baton Rouge and damaged 60 houses and 35 mobile homes. Sixty people were injured. Thunderstorm winds gusting to 90 mph killed three persons and injured four others at Mobile, AL. Thunderstorms also deluged Walnut Hill, FL and Avalon Beach, FL with eight inches of rain. Five of the tornadoes were rated F4 on the Fujita scale, one which tracked through the center of Pampa injuring 7 people and doing $30 million in damages. The Pr oject Vortex team (20 vehicles, including a state of the art truck-mounted Doppler radar, and 2 P3 aircraft) were all over the storms, collecting an incredible storm dynamics, structure, and environment data set, on the last day of the 2 year funded proje ct no less! The team witnessed one of the F4 tornadoes near Allison, and said it was one of biggest and meanest appearing tornadoes they had ever seen. (Intellicast) 9 JUNE ...1953...A tornado of at least F4 intensity hit Worcester, MA killing ninety persons and injured 1288. The Northeastern states usually remain free of destructive tornadoes, however in this case a low pressure system, responsible for producing severe thu nderstorms in Michigan and Ohio the previous day, brought severe weather to New Hampshire and central Massachusetts. The tornado, up to a mile in width at times, tracked 46 miles through Worcester County. It mangled steel towers built to withstand winds of 375 mph. The northern part of the city of Worcester suffered extreme damage. Property damage exceeded 52 million dollars which until then was a record high for a single tornado. 4000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Debris from the tornado fell in the Boston area, and adjacent Atlantic Ocean. Spawned by a classic supercell thunderstorm with tops at 60,000 feet, this tornado was and still is the worst tornadic event in history of New England. (Intellicast) ...1972...A cloudburst along the eastern slopes of the Black Hills of South Dakota produced as much as 14 inches of rain resulting in the Rapid City flash flood disaster. The rains, which fell in about four hours time, caused the Canyon Lake Dam to colla pse. A wall of water swept through the city drowning 238 people, injuring 2932, and causing more than 100 million dollars property damage. (David Ludlum) ...1985...Sacramento, CA came under the grip of a heat wave, which, before it released its grip, would provide 8 consecutive days (June 9 to June 16) with temperatures above 100 degrees. Within this period, 6 consecutive days had high temperatures of 105 degrees or greater! (Intellicast) ...1987...Lightning struck "Tire Mountain" near Denver, CO, destroying two million tires out of a huge pile of six million tires. Thunderstorms spawned three tornadoes around Denver, and a man was killed at Conifer, CO when strong thunderstorm winds lift ed up a porch and dropped it on him. A thunderstorm near Compton, MD produced two inch hail, and high winds which destroyed twenty barns and ten houses injuring five persons. Hail in North Carolina caused more than five million dollars damage to property, and more than sixty million dollars damage to crops. Hail three and a half inches in diameter was reported at New Bern NC. Thunderstorms in the Central High Plains produced eighteen inches of hail at Fountain CO. The temperature at Del Rio, TX soared to an all-time record high of 112 degrees. Milton, FL was deluged with 15.47 inches in 24 hours. Record heat and prolonged drought in south central Texas lef t salt deposits on power lines and insulators near the coast, and when nighttime dew caused arcing, the city of Brownsville was plunged into darkness. Moisture from the remains of Hurricane Boris was responsible for this rare rain event. (Intellic ast) 10 JUNE ...1752...It is believed that this was the day Benjamin Franklin narrowly missed electrocution while flying a kite during a thunderstorm to determine if lightning is related to electricity. (David Ludlum) ...1957...A dust devil at North Yarmouth, ME lifted a 600 to 1000 pound chicken shelter into the air and carried it 25 feet. It landed upright with only slight damage. It is unknown whether any eggs were scrambled. (The Weather Channel) ...1958...A woman was sucked through the window of her home in El Dorado, KS by a powerful tornado, and was carried sixty feet away. Beside her was found a broken phonograph record entitled "Stormy Weather". (The Weather Channel) ...1987...Thunderstorms produced 2 to 4 inch rains in southern Texas. Two and a half inches of rain at Juno, TX caused flooding and closed a nearby highway. Flooding on the northwest side of San Antonio claimed one life as a boy was swept into a culvert . Thunderstorms in the north central U.S. produced an inch and a half of small hail at Monida Pass, MT. Berlin, NH was blanketed with eleven inches of snow during the day. Snow whitened t he higher peaks of the Appalachians as far south as Maryland. It would have been the all-time record for Los Angeles but official records did not begin until twenty days later. Up to twelve inches of rain drenched Harris County, and nearly ten inches soaked Luce Bayou, mainly during the afternoon hours. Thunderstorm rains left seven feet of water over Highway 189 i n northern Val Verde County. Flooding caused nine million dollars damage in Real County. A thunderstorm at Perryton, TX produced golf ball size hail and 70 mph winds, and spawned a tornado which struck a mobile killing one person and injuring the other four occupants. Coolidge, just 180 miles away, was the hot spot in the nation with an afternoon high of 105 degrees. Thunderstorms spawned eleven tornadoes, including one which tore the roof off a restaurant at Bee Branch, AR injuring six persons. The t ornado tossed one car into the restaurant, and another car over it. Temperatures soared into the 90s across much of Florida.
