Comparison of records of coal and all consumption compared to the total carbon implied by the observed upward trend in CO2 shows that only about 60% of emissions are still in the atmosphere. The remainder is presumably being dissolved in the upper ocean, and redistributed throughout the ocean over hundreds to thousands of years by ocean currents. Some may be recycling into enhanced growth of mid latitude forests, such as those in Wisconsin which were almost totally cleared about 100 years ago.
