These past changes are well documented, and are large enough to have contributed significantly to the temperature fluctuations through the ice age cycle. However, their proximate cause is not well established. Candidates include changes in land vegetation induced by climate, or changes in the partitioning of CO2 between atmosphere and ocean mediated by surface temperature. Human activities can be ruled out.
