Lesson 2:Wind, Pressure and Altitude
Lesson Content

This lesson focuses on the forces that cause the wind; and pressure and altimetry.

Setting your Altimeter

Surface pressure is always changing. Thus the altimeter reference is necessary. Increasing the altimeter setting will cause the indicated altitude to increase.

Magnitude and Direction of Forces

Weather results from the interaction of many forces. When discussing these interactions we are concerned with the direction and magnitude, or strength, of the force exerted on an object.

There are different forces that act to move air in a horizontal direction: pressure gradient force, Coriolis force, friction, and centripetal force.

The many altitudes

There are four 'altitudes' with which you should be familiar:

* Indicated Altitude
* Density Altitude
* Pressure Altitude
* True Altitude
