Dr. Louis Uccellini Inducted into 2019 Class of Fellows

November 25, 2019

We at the AOS Department would like to extend our congratulations to Dr. Louis W. Uccellini, Director of the National Weather Service and UW-Madison alum, for his induction into the 2019 class of Fellows at the National Academy of Public Administration. He is the only active NOAA employee to ever receive this honor and one of the few fellows to receive it as an active civil servant.

Founded in 1967, the Academy is an independent, non-profit, and non-partisan organization. In 1984, Congress charted the Academy to help government agencies improve their agencies by finding solutions to current and emerging issues. As part of being inducted into the Academy, Dr. Uccellini will be working on a recently launched program focusing on improving government management and operations.

Dr. Uccellini is an alum of UW-Madison, having gotten his undergraduate degree (1971), graduate degree (1972), and PhD (1977) through the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. He also received the UW-AOS Outstanding Achievement Alumni award in 2016. In his time at the National Weather Service, Dr. Uccellini has helped lead a national effort to improve the nation’s ability to withstand extreme weather, water, and climate events.
